How Often Should You Repaint a House in Queensland?

The general timeframes, the signs it is time regardless of the calendar, and why waiting costs more.

There is no single answer, but there are good rules of thumb. How often you need to repaint depends on whether it is inside or out, how exposed the home is, and how well the last job was done. Here is what to expect in the Queensland and Northern NSW climate.

Exterior

As a general guide, a quality exterior repaint lasts somewhere from several years to a decade, but on the Gold Coast that gets shorter the closer you are to the beach. Salt and strong sun age an exterior faster than an inland or shaded home. The walls that face the most sun and weather always need attention first.

Interior

Interiors last much longer because they are protected from the weather. Most homes go a good decade or more between full interior repaints, though high-traffic areas like hallways, kitchens and kids rooms tend to need a refresh sooner.

Signs it is time, regardless of the calendar

  • Fading, or a chalky residue when you rub the surface.
  • Peeling, flaking or bubbling paint.
  • Cracks in the render or gaps opening at the joins.
  • Mould or algae that keeps coming back.
  • Colours that just look tired and dated.

Why repainting on time saves money

Paint is not just about looks. It is the layer that protects your render, timber and walls from the weather. Once it fails and water gets in, you are no longer paying for a repaint, you are paying to repair the substrate underneath, which costs far more. Staying ahead of it is the cheaper option.
